The convict reportedly refused to buy materials for or execute the job but dishonestly converted the N67,000 to his personal use.
A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court in Abuja on Tuesday sentenced a 32-year-old carpenter, Friday Odo, to two months imprisonment for breach of trust.
Odo, who resides at Gwarinpa Estate, Abuja, was sentenced on a two-count charge of criminal breach of trust and cheating.
The Area Court judge, Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave Odo an option of N10,000 fine while also paying the complainant N67, 000 as compensation.
The convict had earlier pleaded guilty and begged the court for leniency.
Sadiq said that the punishment would have been stiffer if the convict had not saved the court the rigour of protracted prosecution.
He also warned the convict to be of good behaviour.
The Prosecutor Mrs. Florence Auhioboh, had told the court that on April 24, Blessing Nku-ekpany of Katempe Extension, Abuja, had reported the matter at Gwarinpa Police Station.
Auhioboh said that on April 22, the complainant gave Odo N67 000 to buy materials for the construction of bed and dressing mirror.
He said the convict refused to buy the materials or execute the job but dishonestly converted the N67,000 to his personal use.
The prosecutor added that during police investigation the convict made a confessional statement.
Auhioboh said the offence contravened sections 312 and 322 of the Penal Code.
