Folashade Idoko killed her husband Lawrence over infidelity allegations

An auxiliary nurse has been arrested by the Lagos State Police Command for allegedly stabbing her husband to death.

The Lagos State Police Command has arrested an auxiliary nurse, Folashade Idoko, for allegedly stabbing her husband, Lawrence Idoko, to death during a domestic quarrel at their residence located at 20, Kosoko Street, Ayetoro, Oto-Awori Local Government Area of the state.

The Nation reports that the deceased, an indigene of Benue State, was pipeline engineer Greater Inspection and Industrial Services at Sango-Otta, Ogun State, and had suffered years of domestic violence from his wife but decided to keep quiet about it.

It was learned that the couple who had two children, a three-year-old boy, and one-year old girl, had often engaged in disagreement owing to Folashade constantly accusing of her husband of cheating on her.

The incident culminating in the death of Idoko, occurred on Sunday, August 20, 2017, and was triggered by jealousy from the wife after her husband came back from an official assignment where he spent a week in the Ikorodu area of the state.

Reacting to the murder of Idoko, neighbours and the landlord confirmed that the 32-year-old Idoko had suffered several years of domestic abuse at the hands of his wife and efforts by them to mediate had always proven abortive.

A neighbour who spoke on the condition of anonymity said:

“When he [Idoko] returned from his official trip, his wife accused him of having extra-marital affair and the issue led to a quarrel. During the fight, Folashade stabbed him in the leg with a sharp knife.

By the time his three-year-old son’s cries alerted neighbours, he had bled heavily. He died about an hour after he was rushed to the New Ayetoro Medical Centre.

They usually fight and settle and that is why people don’t interfere in their disagreements. Their fights always bothered on infidelity.

The fight on Sunday was caused by the issue of girlfriend. She said the man was calling his girlfriend.

She collected the phone from him and started abusing the person on the phone without even checking who she was talking to. They started abusing each other and went physical.”

However, Folashade who hails from Kwara State, who has been arrested by policemen at Ijaniki, claimed the knife fell on her husband by accident.

Another neighbour, Mrs. Blessing Olokpobri who expressed sadness over Idoko’s death, confirmed his wife's maltreatment of her late husband.

“Their history of violence was known to everybody in the neighbourhood. There was hardly a day they didn’t fight if the husband was at home.

Even on January 1, they fought. There was a time she went to drag him and stripped him naked from a beer parlour around here and beat up an elderly neighbour who tried to intervene.

There was even a time she sliced his ear lobes with a broken bottle and it had to be stitched,” she said.

The landlord, Chief Gani Akanni, who said he was the one who rushed the deceased to the hospital, said he issued a quit notice to the couple because of their incessant fights but changed his mind after other tenants pleaded on their behalf.

Akanni who is the Balogun of Ayetoro said:

“There was a time I took the woman to the police station because she vandalized my property after I locked up the tenants’ rooms for defaulting in payment of Lagos Waste Management Agency (LAWMA) bills.

She went ahead to break the door. It was unfortunate because the husband is such a quiet and peaceful man.”

Confirming the death of the victim, his aunt, Betty Abah, a human rights activist, said her nephew was a victim of domestic abuse.

"It was unfortunate that spousal abuse is still prevalent and that it continues to take a toll on partners, either male or female. My nephew, like many men and women who die daily in violent relationships, would have been alive had he fled such deadly arrangements in the name of marriage.

We, the family, will ensure that justice is done. This is another young and promising life deliberately cut short and this wickedness will not go unpunished.

We would have intervened one way or the other but he hid the entire violent scenario from us. Persons suffering domestic violence should always call out for help. It was indeed a big tragedy for us.”
