Pulse Nigeria Poll: Readers say David should insist on becoming a priest

36% of Pulse Nigeria Poll voters are of the view that David should insist on his life ambition of becoming a Reverend Father.

David is an only son with five sisters and his father will be the happiest man if he would get married early in life and have children who will keep the lineage.

However, his lifelong ambition has always been to become a Reverend father, something his father will not hear of.

For the old man, David becoming a priest will mean the end of his line and has done virtually everything to dissuade him, including threatening to place a curse and disown him.

Read his story here:

"My name is David, a 24-year-old man. I am the only son of my parents and that has always given my father the liberty to decide what I should do.

Though I have five sisters, my father sees me as his only child, his inheritance as my sisters will all get married and go to live with their husbands.

Right from my childhood, I have had the desire to become a Reverend Father to serve God and humanity but my father would never agree to that.

In fact, he began making plans for me to get married immediately I finished secondary school so that I could have children quite early. It only took our Parish priest to convince him to allow me to go to further my education.

When I gained admission into a seminary, it was a tug of war for my father to allow me to go there. But I stood my ground and it caused a serious quarrel between us but in the end, I had my way.

When I told my father of my desire to become a priest, he practically hit the roof and accused me and my mother of trying to end his lineage. He even went as far as confronting the Parish priest of leading me against my family.

I told him that the priest had nothing to do with my decision, that it was of my own volition but since then, he has kept malice with the priest, the Catechist, and even our church elders. At a point, he stopped my mother and sisters from attending the church but there was nothing he could do to stop me.

His latest threat is that he is going to disown and curse me if I insisted on being a priest. I know the Bible says children should respect their parents but then, this is my life and my dream.

I love my father despite our differences but I had vowed before God that I will serve him for the rest of my life.

Should I shelve my ambition just to please him because I feel so much pity for what I am making him go through?

David."

The teaser for the day was:
