The accused,who is facing a two-count charge of theft and willful destruction of property, pleaded not guilty.
A 19-year-old, David Nduka, who allegedly stole the keys to his girlfriend’s mother’s shop and stole laptops and iPads worth N637,000, was on Wednesday brought before a Tinubu Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
The accused,who is facing a two-count charge of theft and willful destruction of property, pleaded not guilty.
The Police Prosecutor, ASP Richard Odigie told the court that the accused committed the offences on May 30 at 5.30 a.m. at Ikota Shopping Complex, Ajah, Lagos.
According to him, the accused entered the shop of his girlfriend’s mother, Mrs Yetunde Nwokocha and stole items worth N637,000.
“Nduka stole the keys to the shop while he was accompanying his girlfriend home from the shop the previous night."
“He later went to the shop the following morning and opened the door with the stolen key and stole two phones, two laptops and one iPad valued at N637,000, ” he said.
Odigie said the accused also destroyed the Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) and a Plasma TV in the shop valued at N150,000.
“The accused was identified through the footage of the CCTV outside the shop which the accused did not know was there.”
The offences contravened Sections 285 (5) (a) and 345 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 (5) stipulates seven years imprisonment for offenders.
The Magistrate, Mrs F.O. Ikobayo, granted the accused a bail of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.
She said one of the sureties must be the accused’s relation, while the other surety should be a civil servant.She adjourned the case until June 13 for mention.
