An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday sentenced a 35- year- old man, Gbenga Adekanbi, to two years imprisonment for stealing a Bajaj motorcycle valued at N260,000.

He, however, pleaded guilty to the charge

The Magistrate, Mr Idowu Olayinka, sentenced him to two years imprisonment with an option of N60,000 fine.

The prosecutor, Insp. Olakunle Shonibare, had told the court that the convict committed the offence on May 2 at about 11:44p.m. at No. 11, Bodunde compound, Saje in Abeokuta.

Shonibare said the convict stole a Bajaj motorcycle valued at N260,000, belonging to the complainant, Mr Mutiu Saheed, who lives at Ile Pupa, Bode Olude Area in Abeokuta.

He explained that the motorcycle was stolen from one Lukeman Oladipupo, who was the rider of the motorcycle that was given to him on installmental payment.

“The accused was said to be the person that took Lukeman to the person who gave him the motorcycle.

“Few days after he collected the motorcycle, the accused went to the rider’s house and stole the motorcycle from where it was packed

“The accused changed the number plate of the motorcycle and started using it to carry passengers at Panseke in Abeokuta, where he was later seen and arrested by the police,’’ he said.

The prosecutor said the owner of the motorcycle went to the police station to identify the motorcycle, which was marked, and produced documents of the motorcycle.

Shonibare said that the offence contravened Section 390 (9) of the Criminal Code, Vol. 1 Laws of Ogun, 2006.
