The court heard that the defendant along with other accomplices who are still at large, committed felony by robbing the deceased of his property before killing him.
A 28-year-old applicant, Abubakar Yau, has been arraigned by the police for the alleged murder of a former Nigerian Ambassador to South Africa, Mr. Sunday Yusuf.
The deceased was reportedly murdered in his home at 17, Younde Street, Wuse Zone 6, Abuja on June 13, 2016.
The News Agency of Nigeria, (NAN) reports that the defendant, a resident of Daki Biu in Jabi, Abuja, was arraigned on Wednesday, May 10, before Justice Othman Angulu of the FCT High Court, Jabi, on a three-count charge by the FCT Police Command.
The court heard that the defendant along with other accomplices who are still at large, committed felony by robbing the deceased of his property before killing him.
The prosecutor, Mr. Adeniyi Oyeyemi, also alleged that the defendant robbed the deceased of the sum of N200, 000 and a Samsung mobile phone (Edge 56).
The suspects allegedly stabbed the deceased with a knife, leading to his death and reportedly threw his corpse from a three storey building.
The crimes contravene Section 6(b) of the Robbery and Firearms Special Provision Act, Law of the Federation of Nigeria (LFN) 2004; Section 1(1) and 2(a) (b) of the same law and Culpable homicide punishable with death.
However, the defendant pleaded not guilty to the charges leveled against him.
NAN reports that Yau's counsel, Mr. Ganiyu Adegbite, prayed the court to release the accused on bail, saying that he was still innocent going by the provision of Section 35 and 36 of the Nigeria Constitution.
Justice Othman Angulu refused the bail application and ordered for the defendant to be remanded in Kuje jail.
The Judge adjourned the matter until July 11 for hearing.
