The accused gave the complainant several fist-blows on his face that caused him injuries, over a misunderstanding they had.
A 27-year-old man, Jimoh Ganiyu, who allegedly assaulted and stole N25,000 from his neighbour, Chinedu Otim, was on Monday charged before a Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.
Ganiyu, who resides at No 9, Nurudeen Close, Orile Iganmu, Lagos, is facing a three-count charge of conspiracy, assault and stealing.
The prosecutor, Sgt. Christopher Okoliko, told the court that the accused committed the offences with some others still at large on April 30 at No. 9, Nurudeen Close, Orile Iganmu, Lagos.
He said the accused gave the complainant several fist-blows on his face that caused him injuries, over a misunderstanding they had.
“When they had rendered him helpless, they stole his money and ran away. It was some neighbours that took him to the hospital and reported the matter to the police,’’ he said.
Okoliko said the offences contravened Sections 171, 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr. A.A.Paul, granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.
He said surety must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.
The case was adjourned until June 27, for mention.
