The suspect, a resident of Kehinde Street, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of beach of peace and assault.
A 36-year-old man, Stanley Okpoto, who allegedly beat a woman, Helen Atadin, to a pulp, on Wednesday appeared in an Apapa Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.
Okpoto, a resident of Kehinde Street, Ajegunle, Apapa, Lagos, is standing trial on a two-count charge of beach of peace and assault.
The prosecutor, Insp. Tony Elibeh, told the court that the accused committed the offences on April 26 at their tenement building.
He said a fight had broken out between them following complaints that Atadin had been abusing the accused.
Efforts by other tenants to settle the matter failed.
The complainant (Atadin) then reported the case to the Police which led to the arrest of the accused, he said.
The offences contravened Sections 166 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).
Section 171 prescribes a three-year jail term for assault occasioning harm.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty.
The Chief Magistrate, Mr Titus Abolainwa, granted the accused bail in the sum N50,000 with one surety in like sum and adjourned the case until June 7 for mention.
