India: 1,000 villages to get the best gift ever- free WiFi

India

It seems Indians are about to be in Heaven as the government plans on providing free WiFi for villagers.

India has joined the league of coolest nations on earth and we are not talking weather.

The Asian country that gave the world Bollywood (and Z World) plans on providing 1,050 villages free WiFi under a project called Digital Village.

From January to June 2017, a WiFi hotspot will be available in each village which will allow the villagers to connect to the Internet via their mobile phones.

Aruna Sundararajan, an official at the Indian Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology said this project is to "provide basic development services to rural areas using digital technology."

The program which will cost $62m at the initial phase also includes interactive education and medical services.

India is a gold mine for Internet providers. There is still a large number of 900 million of Indians not connected to the Internet.

Google and Facebook have joined in on the gold rush. Google has installed its WiFi service (for free) in over 100 railway stations in the country.

Facebook's India Internet plan met a hurdle as regulations stopped it from offering limited Internet access to Indians for free.

While back home in Nigeria, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) wanted to hike the prices of mobile data in the country. This move proved to be highly unpopular among the masses.

After days of backlash on social media, the NCC withdraw its decision to increase the prices of mobile data in the country.

When will the good guys at Google install free-WiFi in our bus stations?  Larry Page, Sergey Brin please do the needful.
