In Lagos: 8 employees arraigned over alleged theft of employer’s N3m

The accused all pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N50,000 each.

Eight staff, charged with stealing their employer’s N3million, appeared before an Ikeja Magistrate on Lagos.

The accused – Godwin Akpan, 30; Adesola Adeyemi, 35; Taiwo Lawal, 25; Egbono John, 33; Ayomide Williams, 21; Kabirat Abisola, 25; Olamide Adeyemi, 25; and Ngozi Ejike, 32, were charged with conspiracy and stealing.

According to the prosecutor, Mr Essien Ndarake, the accused committed the offences on Jan. 14, at the International Wing of Murtala Mohammed International Airport(MMIA), Lagos.

He said that the accused conspired to steal N3million belonging to Metropolitan Bar and Grill, owned by one Mrs. Ebenezer Idowu.

“The accused, who are workers of the outfit, conspired to steal their employer’s money,” he said.

Ndarake alleged that the company discovered the theft after auditing its accounts.

“After careful study of the financial activities of the company, it was discovered that N3million was stolen, which  placed the company in jeopardy."

“When the workers were called, four of them confessed that all of them had been stealing from the company,” he said.

He said that the offences contravened sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), reports that section 285 prescribes three years imprisonment as penalty for stealing.

The accused all pleaded not guilty and were granted bail in the sum of N50,000 each, with two sureties in like sum by the magistrate, Mrs. K. Kubeinje, who adjourned the case to Feb. 20 for mention.
