Instagram Live is about to give social media addicts a strong dose of fame and notoriety.
Yesterday, Tuesday, January 24, 2017, Instagram Live was rolled worldwide.
The notifications started popping up on my iPhone shortly after. Nigerian rappers, singers, actors, models got on the new feature quick. Instagram has just rolled out its new social media drug and the addicts are already lining up to try it out.
From the lair of Mark Zuckerberg comes Instagram Live. Though it is not innovative, you can do live videos on Facebook and YouTube, the feature seems to have found its natural home on Instagram.
Social media is built on the foundation of vanity, the need to be heard, seen and worshipped. Instagram has the strongest dose of this vanity to sell one's self as a superstar who is famous for doing just ordinary things.
For a minute SnapChat was the new kid on the block but Instagram went all Walter White is strong-arming its opponents.
With Instagram Live, the possibility for an ordinary person to become famous for nothing has gone from most likely to almost certain. Reality TV is now old school when you can press live on your phone and shoot your own TV show with you as the main and only star.
The barrier to fame got thinner with reality TV. I bet it will almost vanish with Instagram live. The next Kim K will be born in the Instagram Live videos feed and not in the boardroom of E!
Mass media has given away to social media and the latter has created you media.
Everybody now has a shot to feed on their vanity, more likely overdose on it. If we all want to be stars, who will be the gazers?
