The accused all pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.
The Police in Osun on Monday brought eight suspects before an Osun Magistrate’s Court sitting in Modakeke over alleged possession and smoking of Indian hemp.
The accused are: Sarafa Waheed (26), Kehinde Bamidele (25), Gbenga Adewole (29), Moses Olojede (20), Kunle Adeyemo (20), Afeez Babawale (19), Abiola Ifatuwase (25) and Ibrahim Moshood (20).
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Ona Glory, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct 25, 2016 around 8:00 am at Okeyidi/ Egbedore Area, Modakeke, Ile-Ife.
Glory said that the accused conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace in the area.
He added that the accused were found smoking a substance suspected to be Indian hemp which caused pandemonium in the area and was injurious to public health.
According to him, the offence contravened sections 249 (d) and 430 of the state penal code.
The accused, however, all pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against them.
Counsel for the defence, Mr Abiodun Akindipe, pleaded for the bail of the accused in the most liberal terms, and pledged that his clients would not jump bail, and would produce reliable sureties.
The Senior Magistrate, Mrs Bose Awosan, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N200, 000 each, with one surety each in like sum, who must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
Awosan said that the sureties must swear to an affidavit of means, be a blood relation of the accused and produce two recent passport photographs.
She adjourned the case till Dec. 21, for hearing.
