The victim, Rev. Fr. Paul Irikefe, was freed on Wednesday, September 7, around Benin City, Edo State, where his captors reportedly took him.
Father Irikefe who is a lecturer at Saint’s Peter and Paul Catholic Major Seminary in Bodija, Ibadan, Oyo State, was abducted on that fateful day within the Warri/Effurun metropolis.
The priest was in Warri attending the burial of a friend and colleague, Rev. Fr. Amaefule Chike, which was to take place on Tuesday, September 6, at the Agbarho Pastoral Centre, Ughelli North Local Government Area of the state.
A source from the Warri Diocese, while confirming the priest's release, said it was unclear if the church had met the N30million ransom demand the kidnappers made initially.
Another source confirmed to news correspondents this morning that the priest has been reunited with the Bishop of Warri Diocese, Bishop John Okeoghene Afareha.
The priest is reported to have been traumatised by the incident, due to the maltreatment he suffered at the hands of his captors.
