Beggars under the guise of masquerades have been ordered arrested by the Obong of Calabar, Ekpo Abasi-Otu V.
The Obong of Calabar, Ekpo Abasi-Otu V, has ordered the arrest of any masquerade found begging along the streets in the state.

Abasi-Otu reportedly made the call today, September 8, during the formation of Eminent People’s Forum in the state, organised by the Commissioner of Police, Mr Jimoh Ozi-Obeh.
The Obong represented by Etubom Bassey Duke, the Chairman of Etubom’s Traditional Rulers Council in the palace, disclosed that the move became necessary after a series of complaints were lodged about some masquerades.
He added that the palace of the Obong has received numerous petitions, stating that criminals were hiding under the guise of ‘masquerade’ to extort money from residents of the state.
“The palace of the Obong of Calabar has received several petitions about the wicked act of some masquerades in Calabar.
“Some of these people hide under the guise of masquerades to extort money from people. They also carry out heinous crimes while pretending to be spirits.

“We don’t permit masquerades to go about in the street begging for money unless it is a very big cultural event.
“I am calling on the police to arrest any masquerade found begging for money along the streets of Calabar.”
He urged the Cross River police command to curb the situation in the state.
