A pastor who was caught for stealing car said he formed his gang so he can use the proceed to run his church.

A self-acclaimed pastor, Onyenweaku Chibunam, who was arrested and disgraced by a vigilante group in Amaekpu-Ohafia, Ohafia Local Government Area of Abia State, for being the leader of a car snatching syndicate in the area, has confessed that he used the proceeds from the sale of the stolen cars to run his church.

South-South News reports that Chibunnam, who is the General Overseer of Assembly of the Redeemed at Ohafia, confessed to the police that he actually formed the gang so that he would have the money to fund his church.

Confirming the arrest of the pastor-robber, the State Commissioner of Police, Leye Oyebade, said Chibunnam was caught red-handed while stealing a Toyota Camry in Ebem Ohafia community, also in the same local government area, while an accomplice identified as Prince Nnabugwu, was later arrested and they both confessed to belonging to a car snatching syndicate.

“They were arrested after stealing the Toyota Camry from where its owner packed it some days ago. The suspects were arrested based on a tip-off. They confessed to have stolen six Toyota Camry cars from Aba and sold some of them to one Maxwell in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital,” Oyebade said.

While confessing to the crime, Chibunnam said his gang only steal parked cars and do not snatch from their owners, explaining that the car they were caught with was the sixth they had stolen in the last few months.

“Maxwell (the buyer) contacted me sometime last year to buy my car that I put up for sale, but he didn’t give me a good price for it, so, I couldn’t sell it to him.

But when I stole an old model Toyota Camry last year, I called him to come and take the car I stole. We started having a misunderstanding when he requested the car’s original papers and I couldn’t provide them. I later told him that I stole the car.

Maxwell became more interested in the business and gave me a master key with which I could steal Toyota Camry cars. I used the money from the crime to fund my 30-member church.

I promise not to return to crime if I am set free by the police. It was the work of the devil.”
