A 30-year-old poverty hungry man has been remanded in prison in Ogun State for stealing some tubers of yam.

An Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court sitting in Isabo, Ogun State, has remanded a 30-year-old man, Samodi Olorodo, in prison custody for allegedly stealing 18 tubers of yam and a bunch of vegetables from a shop in the community.

Olorodo, according to the police prosecutor, Inspector Olakunle Shonibare, who was arraigned on a one count-charge of theft, committed the offense on August 1, 2016, at about 10 am in the Oke-Odo Area of Osiele, Abeokuta.

Shonibare told the court that the owner of the yams, Adeneye Safiu, caught the accused with the 18 tubers valued at N10, 000 and a bunch of vegetables worth N50.

According to the prosecutor, when the complainant got to his store, he saw the accused person coming out from the store with the tubers of yam and a bunch of vegetables on his head and when he was interrogated on how he came about the items, he could not give a reasonable answer, which led to his arrest, adding that the offence contravened Sections 516, 383 and 390 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

When the charge was read to him, Olorodo pleaded not guilty and the Magistrate, Idowu Olayinka, ordered that he be remanded at the Federal Prisons, Ibara, to enable the police to carry out more investigation, while adjourning the case till October 5, 2016, for further hearing.
