Pulse Nigeria Poll: Readers say they will never marry someone they have never met before

73% of Pulse Nigeria Poll voters vow that they can never get married to someone they have never met before.

A reader, Amaka, is in a serious dilemma as her parents are no longer comfortable that at 31, she is yet to get married. And to solve the problem for her, they have chosen a man who lives in China for her and they have set in motion, plans for her to marry someone she does not even know.

And to complicate matters, the man would not even be at the wedding as his brother will stand in for him.

Read her letter here:

"My name is Amaka and I am 31-years-old. I have a problem I would love to share with your readers, hoping to get some useful advice before I make a mistake that would scar me for life.

I know that at my age, I am supposed to jump at any opportunity of getting married but I am scared to my bones because my family wants me to get married to someone I have never met in my life just because he lives abroad.

The decision by my parents came after the last man I had dated for eight years, dumped me for another woman after we had done our introduction and everything had been fixed for our wedding. Without notice, Mike decided I was no more good enough for him after wasting my youth.

I was devastated and vowed never to have anything to do with men ever again. But in December, my father summoned me home and made it clear that since all my younger sisters are married, they have decided to marry me off to a man who lives in China and has mandated his parents to get a wife for him.

This is someone I have never met in my life but my parents told me he is well to do, and above all, is from our village and lives 'abroad'. I did not want to argue with them and said I would think about it.

I made some enquiries and found out that Obinna, (that is his name), had travelled to South Africa over 20 years ago and though was doing well, was into drug trafficking and had spent some 10 years in prison before moving to China to continue with the illegal business.

And that is the kind of man my parents want me to get married to by proxy. They even told me he won't be around for the wedding but that his brother would represent him, after which they would send me to him.

I am not sure I want to go along with the arrangement but my father has vowed to disown me if I refuse to marry Obinna.

I do not know how to convince him that I will not marry a man I do not know and a drug peddler at that.

Amaka."

The teaser for the day was:

Would you get married to someone you have never met before?

How Nigeria voted:

Yes, I will marry him/her - 10%

No, I will only marry someone I have courted and known about him/her - 73%

I will only agree to the marriage if that is the only option left - 19%

How would you vote here?
