In Benin: Magistrates’ Court slams N50,000 bail on phone thief

The accused pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.

For allegedly stealing a phone valued N6,000 and N1,000 cash, an Egor Magistrates’ Court in Benin has slammed a N50,000 bail on a 20-year-old man.

The accused, Joshua Innocent, was brought to the court by the Police in Benin for stealing one Itel mobile phone handset and the cash from one Akpobome Blessing.

The Prosecutor, Cpl. Ayo Augustine, told the court that the accused with others now at large, committed the offence on Nov. 25, at Ekosodin Quarters, Benin.

Augustine alleged that the accused stole one Itel handset valued at N6,000 and N1,000 cash from their victim.

He said the accused had one HP laptop without receipt in his possession at the time he was arrested which was also suspected to be stolen.

Augustine said the offence contravened section 390 (9) and 430 of the Criminal Code.

The accused pleaded not guilty to a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and stealing.

The Magistrate, Mr F.E. Akhere, granted the accused person N50,000 bail and a surety in like sum who must be gainfully employed.

Akhere adjourned the case till Dec. 12 for hearing.
