The 9th edition of Nigeria biggest and most prestigious music awards, The Headies has expected lived up to its billing and the event which brought together celebrities and master minds in the entertainment industry was a night of fun and drama.
The award which commenced at about 11:30 pm opened in grand style as the rookie finalists were invited to the stage by beat fm on air personality, JIMMIE.
Slyde was the first to dish out his hit track, ‘’Banana’’ after which naija nina first lady, Younggrey C lit up the stage with her banging single, It was then time for Mavin signee, Reekado Banks to thrill the fans.
Jimmie comes back on stage to usher in YBNL signee Lil kesh who dropped series of amazing performances with his shoki movement. It was then time for the kolombo master, Mrsongz to do his thing. Nikki Laoye’s performance was a mind blowing one basically because of the dance drama dished out on stage during her performance, followed by an energetic performance by Cynthia morgan.
Speak of surprise and class, The Headies is a veteran, When Basketmouth and Toke Makinwa were revealed as the hosts of the event, many fans never saw that coming and as usual the duo were just so perfect.
The awards presentation started, DJ Exclsuive and Victoria Kimani presented the first award of the night for the best rnb single to 2face which was received by his wife Annie Idibia. Just after that, Skales took to the stage to perform hit track Shake Body.
The next award, Best pop single was presented by Emmy Collins and was won by the mavin crew. A documentary presentation by UN on the issue of rape was nicely done just after the presentation. The next category for the best rap single was presented to the winner “Phyno’’ by Tosyn Bucknor and Uche Nnaji.
Toke makinwa and Julius agwu showed of their dance skills with some nice displays and just after that it was time for the Limpopo master kcee to thrill the audience. Performing with a marching band, the five star artiste performed his hit track “pull over”. He was then taking off stage with a wheel barrow to the amusement of everyone
DJ Spinall presented oritsefemi with the award for the best streethop single of the year while Okey Bakassi and Annie Idibia presented the award for the best male vocal performance to Timi Dakolo.
Just after that Pasuma and Kayode Akintemi presented the award for the best R&B/pop album to Sean Tizzle. While rave of the moment Patoranking came on stage to perform ‘Alubarika’, he was later joined on stage by Tiwa Savage to perform the Hit single ‘’Girlie O’’
Tracy Nwapa and Chi-girl presented the award for the best vocal performance female to EME first lady Niyola.
While Maria okan and soundsultan presented the award for the best rap album to Olamide who dedicated his award to Lil Kesh. Winner of The best vocal performance (male), Timi Dakolo took to the stage to perform his hit track “Iyawo mi’’.
In a lighter mood, Guests got to enjoy the best of 2014 as the highpoints of the year were reviewed and just after that patoranking picked up his award for the best reggae /dancehall song for Girlie O remix presented by Beverly Osu and DJ Caise.
On a sober note, the low points of 2014 were reviewed as our fallen heroes were recognized. Osas Ighodaro and Gbenro Ajibade presented the award for the best collabo of the year to Wizzypro ft runtown, patoranking and skales.
Just as Runtown performed his hit track successful and was later joined by wizzypro, skales and patoranking on stage as they performed ‘’Emergency’’. Shina Peller and Tola Odunsi presented kcee with the award for the hiphopworld revelation.
The audience got a feel of South Africa with a short documentary about SA. Then Cobhams was called out to pick up his award for the best recording of the year presented to him by Chief Tony Okoroji. Our hosts of the night, Basketmouth and Tokstarr continued to entertain the fans with their rib cracking displays. BOJ picked up his award for the best alternative song presented to him by Bolanle Olukanmi and Tomi Odunsi. It was then time for the DJs to show the stuff they are made off and as you know the likes of Dj Spinall, Dj Caise, Dj Lambogini, Dj Jimmy Jatt didn’t disappoint.
Mr Mabutho presented Don Jazzy with the award for the best music producer which was received by the mavin crew. Emmanuel Ikubese presented the award for the lyricist on the roll category to Jesse Jagz while Drsid performed hit track Surulere and was joined by Donjazzy to everyone’s surprise.
A joyous patoranking received his next rated award and the key to his brand new Hyundai SUV presented to him by representatives of Hyundai and Beverly Naya. While Blacky comes up on stage and get the audience on their feet with his electrifying performance. Sir victor Uwaifo is presented with his Hall of fame award by King Wasiu Ayinde.
Toolz and Audu Maikori presented the award for the best African act to Sarkodie who was unavoidably absent.
Alobam master, Phyno dished out an energetic performance as he performed his hit track “Alobam” which was immediately followed by another scintillating performance by Davido. Davido then picks himself up from his seat to collect his best song of the year award for hit track ‘’Aye’’. The award was presented to him to legendary comedian AY.
Moving on; King baddo Olamide received his second award of the night as his name was called out as the winner of the album of the year category. Just after picking up his award, he immediately dropped a scintillating performance. Davido walked away with the last award of the night winning the artiste of the year while Psquare wrapped up the show with a breath-taking performance.
So if you missed The Headies 2014, I’m sorry to say but you missed a whole lot. But not to worry, The Headies will be making a return next year bigger, stronger and brighter. See you in 2015!
