The Matharoo sisters grant an interview speaking about their arrest in Nigeria in December 2016.
The Matharoo sisters are back in the news after they left Nigeria in January following an extortion scandal.
Jyoti Matharoo and Kiran Matharoo spoke to CTV News in Canada about their incarceration in December 2016. The Canadian Kardashians were involved in a scandal involving Nigerian billionaire Femi Otedola.
Jyoti and Kiran are said to have had 274 pictures and videos of influential and powerful Nigerian men in compromising positions. They were arrested by the police for allegedly running a blackmail site called Naija Gist Live. Their passports were seized and they made a video apologising to Femi Otedola before they were allowed to leave the country.
The sisters have been keeping a low profile since they got back to Canada. "Everyone thinks we’re missing or dead or worse," Kiran told CTV in an exclusive interview.
In the CTV report, it was stated that the Matharoo sisters have dated some of the richest men in Nigeria before their brush with the law. The last time they were in Nigeria they were arrested for attempting to extort Otedola.
In the interview, they spoke about their horrible experience in jail. "I was yelling and I was saying, ‘Show me an arrest warrant, show me something with my name on it. But they didn’t have any identification" said Kiran.
"There was rats in there, there was 11 other girls. Two pieces of foam, I was crying the whole night, I was freaking out" she further said.
According to the sisters, they were taken to a hotel the next day. They were in the custody of the police who held on to their passports. They went to make a video claiming that they created the website not with "the intention was not hurt anyone or to be malicious."
In the interview, they claimed that were scapegoats to cover a scandal involving "a powerful and wealthy person."
Two months before their last arrival in Nigeria, Femi Otedola petitioned the Nigerian Police Force to carry out an investigation into the site. This was according to court papers which they claim did not have their names.
"It was pretty much being forced, otherwise you’re going to be thrown into a maximum security prison for God knows how long," said Kiran on why they made the apology video.
Now back in Canada they want to clear their name from the scandal. "I think this stain on our reputation will never be cleared. Because now, no matter what we do, it’s always going to be there."
The Matharoo sisters have missed their court dates in Nigeria. Their next court date is on May 22. Presently there is no extradition agreement between Nigeria and Canada.
