In Lagos: Businessman faces N3.5m fraud charge

The accused, who resides at 1, Alhaji Lawal St., Ketu, a suburb of Lagos, is tried for stealing conspiracy, stealing and obtaining money.

A 43- year-old businessman, Saka Ahmed, was on Thursday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly obtaining N3.5 million on the pretext of building a filling station.

The accused, who resides at 1, Alhaji Lawal St., Ketu, a suburb of Lagos, is tried for stealing conspiracy, stealing and obtaining money by false pretenses.

The prosecutor, Insp. Rachel Williams told the court that the offences were committed sometime in 2014 at Katangowa Market, Abule Egba Road, Lagos.

Williams said the accused with another man still at large obtained N3.5 million from the complainant, Mr Emmanuel Awosanmi, on the pretext of building a petrol station.

She said the accused was sighted by the complainant, who alerted the Police and he was apprehended.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The offences contravened Sections 285, 312 and 410 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes three years for offenders, while Section 312 provides 15 years.

The Magistrate, Mrs L. Y. Balogun, in her ruling, granted the accused a bail of N1 million with two sureties in like sum.

Balogun adjourned the case until May 24 for mention.
