In Lagos: Boy docked for alleged stealing

An 18-year-old, Victor Udekwu, was arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Tuesday for allegedly stealing some electronics and other items.

The stolen items were valued at N51, 000.

He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Sgt. Yomi Egunjobi, told court that the accused and two others now at large, committed the offences on April 24 at Beriberi Market Street in Agege, near Lagos.

“The accused entered the apartment of one Saliu Salami and stole a set of home theatres with slippers, valued at N51, 000."

“The accused was caught in the act by the complainant’s neigbour and was apprehended immediately."

Egunjobi said that the offences contravened Sections 285 and 409 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 285 prescribes a three-year jail term for anyone convicted of stealing, while Section 409 stipulates two years for conspiracy.

The Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Osinbanjo, admitted the accused to bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.

She said the surety must be gainfully employed and should also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Osinbanjo adjourned the case until May 29 for mention.
