In Abuja: Woman docked for allegedly receiving stolen fish, gets N150, 000 bail

A Karu Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Tuesday granted bail to 67-year-old businesswoman, Sarah Omoruyi, docked for allegedly receiving stolen dry fish worth N120,000.

The judge, Hassan Ishaq, also ordered the defendant to produce a reliable surety in like sum.

He said the surety must live within the jurisdiction of the court and adjourned the case until July 11 for hearing.
Omoruyi was arraigned on a count charge of dishonestly receiving stolen property, punishable under Section 317 of the Penal Code.

Earlier the prosecutor, Mamud Ismail, had told the court that one Musa Lawal, a resident of Mararaba in Nasarawa State, reported the matter at Karu Police Station on May 14.

Ismail said that the accused dishonestly purchased four cartons of dried fish from one Isa Muritala.

According to him, Muritala who was arraigned before a court, broke into a shop at Karu Market, Abuja, and stole the four cartons of dried fish valued at N 120,000.

He said that the defendant went ahead to purchase the said dried fish knowing well that they were stolen items.

He added that during police investigation, the cartons of dried fish could not be recovered, as the defendant had sold them.
