Hunger In The Land: 80-yr-old man, wife, children docked for stealing food items

The prevailing economic hardship in the country has forced an 80-year-old man, his wife and two children to steal food items in Oyo State.

An 80-year-old man, Musa Akano, his 45-year-old wife, Kehinde and their two children, Musa, 17, and Idowu, 11, have been arraigned before a Chief Magistrates' Court sitting in Iyaganku, Ibadan, Oyo State, for allegedly breaking into a shop and stealing some food items.

Punch reports that the octogenarian and his entire family were charged for allegedly breaking into a house located on 4, Ogunde Street, Apete area of Ibadan, to steal the food items.

The accused and another man, identified as Azeez, were arraigned on a four-count charge ‎of conspiracy, burglary, stealing and receiving stolen goods.

The police prosecutor, Shalewa Hammed told the court that the suspects conspired to burgle the shop belonging to one Mrs. Olugbomi Jolade to steal bags of rice, beans, beverages and other household items worth N34,700 on May 8, 2017, at about 8 pm.

He added that the youngest of the accused person, Idowu, was used to enter and rob the shop because of his small size, adding that the couple acted as criminal receivers who also specialized in selling the stolen items.

When the charges were read to the accused, they all pleaded not guilty and the Chief Magistrate, Mrs. A. F. Richard granted the accused persons bail in the sum of N50,000 with two sureties in like sum but ordered that they should be remanded in prison custody pending when they will meet their bail conditions.
