Funmi Iyanda breaks down why Yoruba men are polygamous in nature.
The term 'Yoruba demon' is meant to describe a playboy from the South-Western region in Nigeria.
The popular belief is this- the average Yoruba man is a smooth talker, great dresser who has multiple sexual partners and has a knack for breaking the hearts of innocent women. Hence the term Yoruba demon.
The term surfaced on Twitter a couple of years and it is now a fixture in Nigerian pop culture. Beware of Yoruba boys for they will break your hearts goes the popular warning among maidens.
The term itself is so big these days that veteran TV presenter had to share her views on the Casanova from the South-West.
On the second part of Episode 2 of her YouTube show 'Ask Funmi', Funmi Iyanda breaks down the notorious term.
"I think a lot of things we call African culture are actually a confusion and bastardization of Victorian ideas, Victorian philosophy and Victorian culture" said Funmi Iyanda.
"...this is why this Yoruba thing is very interesting because what people don't like is that they are paired on one hand to be very Western and on the other hand they behave like bushmen who are polygamous in nature" she further said.
Funmi Iyanda went on to say the modern Yoruba man struggles in between traditional Yoruba values and Victorian principles. "What you get are these young men who on the surface of it look like westernized men but deep down they have these ideas of Yoruba ideas of what relationships should be."
Additionally she said "Deep down the average Yoruba man wants to be like his great-great-great grandfather."
Funmi Iyanda later went on to make a controversial statement. "He doesn't really mind his wife cheating as long as he doesn't know."
Her point of view might be controversial to some members of the public who consider Funmi Iyanda as a radical.
In February 2017, Funmi Iyanda stated that she isn't interested in getting marriage.
