The heartless murderers of the Uber driver

A three-man gang that killed the driver of a Uber taxi and stole his vehicle has been smashed by the Lagos State Police.

The Lagos State Police Command has smashed a three-man gang who posed as prospective passengers to kill an Uber driver and steal his vehicle, Punch reports.

Two of the suspects, Osaro Egbomrewen and Michael Eyeoekpe were arrested by the operatives of the anti-kidnapping squad of the Lagos State Command while the third suspect identified as Destiny, is said to be on the run.

While parading the suspects, the state Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, said they had had reportedly chartered the Uber taxi, a Kia Rio saloon car with the Registration number KTU 594 DM driven by Nnobosa Emmanuel, from Ogba area of the state, and told the driver to take them to the Obawole area of Fagba, where he was strangled to death.

Police investigations revealed that the suspects used a belt to strangulate the driver to death and drove his vehicle to Delta State where they tried to sell it off.

CP Owoseni said the police were working on a report of a missing Uber driver when the suspects were arrested.

"The suspects who posed as passengers strangled the Uber driver and dumped his remains at Ogba and the vehicle was taken to Delta State where it was recovered and the suspects arrested.”

One of the suspects, Egbomrewen, 31, while responding to questions by journalists, said,

“We are three that participated in the killing of the driver. I and Michael met at Ogba where I went to drink and we became friends.

I told him how difficult things were for me that I needed to relocate to Benin to start all over because things were not moving well for me in Lagos.

It was at this point that Michael told me about a deal that could fetch me some money that we could get a car and then sell it to his boss.

Michael then told me about one Alex who had a vehicle and we agreed to meet the following day; since then we have been meeting to discuss how to buy the vehicle.

On the fateful day the Uber driver came, I was with Michael in his office and his friend Destiny was with him but I don’t know if he discussed the vehicle deal with Destiny.

Around 9:30 pm, we called the Uber driver to come pick us at Tantalizer eatery at Ogba. I and Destiny were inside the vehicle with the driver, but Michael was outside.

I was holding the belt; immediately I put the belt around the driver’s neck, Destiny dragged the belt and we strangled him.

When we were satisfied that he was dead, we took his corpse to Oremeji Street and dumped him in front of a church around 10:30 pm without anybody noticing us.

After killing the driver, we took the vehicle to Michael’s boss to sell the vehicle and he enquired on how we got it but when we told him that we killed the owner, he said we should take the car away.

Michael said we should take the vehicle to his house and park it outside before taking it to another buyer in Benin, where we were tracked to and arrested."

The second suspect, Eyeoekpe, while also confessing to the crime, however, insisted it was Egbomrewen that hatched the crime.

“I told him I have someone who can buy the vehicle. When I called the man and told him about the car, he was interested initially, but when he asked how we got the car, he was furious and told me never to involve him in issues that involve loss of life of human being.

When I told Osaro this, he told me that he will take the car to Delta to look for another buyer that night. I didn’t see him again until he brought police to my house and I was arrested."

The Lagos Police Commissioner said the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded while efforts would be intensified to arrest the fleeing suspect.
