Adebayo, who was arraigned along with a motor parts dealer, Kingsley Alexander, 35, had no legal representative.
An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos on Friday sentenced a shoe seller, Moses Adebayo, to 18 months imprisonment for receiving a stolen car.
The Magistrate, Mrs A. T. Omoyele, said that Adebayo was sentenced, based on the facts before the court, noting that the sentence would act as deterrent to others.
The News of Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Adebayo was sentenced after he pleaded guilty to a two-account charge of conspiracy and stealing.
Adebayo, who was arraigned along with a motor parts dealer, Kingsley Alexander, 35, had no legal representative.
Adebayo admitted that he bought the car from a man whose name was given simply as Festus for N40, 000.
He told court that he, thereafter, sold the car to another person for N60, 000.
The convict and Alexander, who pleaded not guilty, were arraigned on March 20, 2017.
The Prosecutor, Sgt. Cyriacus Osuji, said the accused committed the offences on March 16 at Jakande in Lekki, Lagos.
The prosecutor said that the convict and Alexander also conspired and stole a Mercedes Benz marked LSD 167 AE, valued at N800, 000, which was in the custody of the Ilasan Police Station.
Osuji said that the offences contravened Sections 287 (7) and 407 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The prosecutor said that the vehicle was involved in an accident and was kept in the custody of the police.
He added that Alexander allegedly conspired and towed the car from where it was parked and sold it.
Osuji, however, tendered the statement of the accused, which was admitted in evidence.
Omoyele adjourned the case until May 3 for further trial of Alexander.
