A 45-year-old auto mechanic, Osifo Friday, who allegedly obtained N1.15 million from a man on the pretext of repairing his Mercedez Benz car, on Thursday appeared before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on a charge of theft.
Friday, who lives in Mushin area of Lagos, pleaded not guilty to obtaining money under false pretences and stealing charges brought against him.
But the prosecutor, Sgt. Edet Akadu, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Feb. 3 at Oloje Street, Papa-Ajao, Mushin.
Akadu said that the complainant, Osaigbevo Anthony, gave the money to the accused for him to repair his damaged Mercedes Benz C class, but failed to do so.
“The accused failed to carry out the repairs as agreed; the complainant reported the case to the police and the accused was immediately apprehended.”
The offences contravened Sections 285 and 312 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.
The accused risks at least three years on conviction, according to the Criminal Law.
Ruling on the bail application of the accused, Magistrate E.O. Ogunkanmi granted him bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.
“The sureties must be gainfully employed and also show evidence of tax payment to the Lagos State Government.”
The court adjourned the case to Feb. 28 for mention.
