In Benue: 7-yr-old pupil dies following collapse of school building

The building collapsed while the pupils were observing a break within the school premises.

Nyom Godwin, a 7-year-old pupil of the Victory International Nursery and Primary School, Daudu has been killed following the collapse of a building located in the institution.

While Godwin died instantly from the tragedy, four other people were lucky to escape death with just injuries to nurse.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 during a break period in the school premises.

According to the Daily Post News, the pupils were having a meal when a block of two classrooms fell on them.

Jeremiah Agba, the head teacher of the school confirmed the report in a statement.

“The ugly incident happened when the pupils were eating behind the building during break time; unfortunately, we lost a seven-year-old pupil on the spot.

“Another, Mlankyaa Nguevese had a fracture on one of his legs while three others sustained minor injuries.

“The injured pupils are receiving treatment at a hospital while the body of the deceased has been buried at his home town, Tse-Hungwa, Ugondu, Guma LGA of the state," he said.

In his reaction to the incident, Hon. Matthew Mnyam, the Special Adviser to the Benue State Governor on Education demanded that the building be pulled down completely.

He admonished school administrators to insist on quality structures when starting a building project.
