Yahya Jammeh has had a 'colourful' married life. As the cliché (and perhaps sexist saying) goes, ‘behind every ‘successful’ man is a woman’, this is perhaps the best time to have a look at the women in Yahya Jammeh’s life.

As the political drama concerning the crisis in The Gambia continues to unfold, it has generated greater interest in the life of the protagonist, Yahya Jammeh.

After losing the December 2016 elections, President Jammeh conceded defeat to the candidate of the opposition, Adama Barrow. However, a few days later, he changed his mind and despite today, January 19, being the day he is supposed to officially hand over to Mr Barrow, he has resolved to stay in power.

Yahya Jammeh has had a colourful married life. He divorced his first wife Tuti Faal in 1998 after four years of marriage and that same year he married Zineb Jammeh in 1998. In 2010, he then married Alima Sallah, whose age,  21, at the time was disputed by some who claimed she was actually 18.

The marriage to Sallah is said to have infuriated Zineb, with insider sources reporting her considering divorcing him. The threat seemed to have worked as he divorced Alima Sallah a year later.

In 2012, he was also reported by some in the Ghanaian media to have married a 22-year-old Ghanaian, Nora, although that seems very unlikely as there no photos of him and the said woman. Yahya Jammeh is a flamboyant character and would have certainly made the world aware of this marriage.

However, during his marriage to Sallah, only Zineb Jammeh could be addressed with the title of First Lady.

Zineb is the daughter of a prominent Guinean diplomat and a Moroccan mother. She was born in Rabat, Morocco and has a diploma in International Systems and Management.

She has two children with Yahya Jammeh, a daughter Miriam Jammeh and a son Muhammed Jammeh.
