As Japan readies itself for the Olympics, it has appointed Anime characters as ambassadors.
This can only happen in the country of Japan, the home of anime.
Son Goku, the famous anime character in Dragon Ball Z has been chosen as an ambassador of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics games.
Goku joins a team of famous anime characters such as Naruto who has a cult fan base in Nigeria, Oliver Atom, Luffy and the heroines of Sailor Moon. Mario too is an official ambassador of Tokyo 2020.
The Japanese government wants this Olympics edition to appeal to millennials that is why anime characters are involved.
At the closing ceremony of Rio 2016, the Prime Minister of Japan, Shinzo Abe was dressed as Super Mario and announced that Japan's rich culture will be central to the Olympic games in 2020.
Tokyo 2020 merchandise which features these characters has already started going on sale.
Since the Olympics game will take place in Tokyo in 2020, a vital and legendary anime character is missing from the lineup.
Akira, arguably the greatest anime of all time, takes place in post third world war Japan in 2019, a year before the 2020 summer Olympic games.

Japan is still recovering from the war and neo-Tokyo is a cyberpunk urban complex riddled with biker gang violence. At the heart of the story is Shotaro Kaneda who saves neo-Tokyo from his psychic friend/monster/energy god that wants to destroy neo-Tokyo.
The epic battle, strangely enough, takes place at the uncompleted Tokyo stadium.
The coincidence of the date of the Olympics in Akira and in real life should make the organisers think of picking the character of Shotaro Laneda as an ambassador.
