Nigeria is one of the few countries in the world that has a life expectancy of below 60 years.
On January 9, 2017, The International Spectator tweeted an index of the countries where life expectancy is below 60 years.
Unsurprisingly, Nigeria made the list with a few other countries. In 2015, life expectancy in Nigeria was 54 years old according to the World Health Organisation (WHO). This data made Nigeria 171 on the World Life Expectancy ranking.
The top 20 causes of death in Nigeria include Influenza and Pneumonia, HIV/AIDS, Stroke, Coronary Heart Disease, Diarrhoeal diseases, Malaria, Diabetes Mellitus, Meningitis, Prostate Cancer, Liver Disease, Road Traffic Accidents, Malnutrition, Low Birth Weight, Maternal Conditions, Tuberculosis, Breast Cancer, Birth Trauma, Falls, Violence and Fires.
Despite this low expectancy, Nigeria is still one of the happiest countries in the world.
In March 2016, Nigeria was rated the sixth happiest in the continent of Africa. This was according to the latest World Happiness Report, compiled by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network for the United Nations.
GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy were among the six key factors measured to establish a global ranking of the happiest countries.
Other factors include freedom to make life choices, generosity and perceptions of corruption.
Only five African countries rank among the top 100, and eight of the last ten overall are in Sub-Saharan Africa.
In December 2016, life expectancy in the United States dropped for the first time since the peak of the HIV/AIDS crisis more than 20 years ago, as deaths rose from nearly every major cause.
The total US population's life expectancy in 2015 was 78.8 years, a decrease of 0.1 year from 2014, said the report by the National Center for Health Statistics.
