US condemns violence in Rivers State re-run elections

With the year 2016 rounding up in a few weeks, Nigerians are looking forward to the new year with renewed optimism and are praying some things go away with the year.

At the end of the year, most people make resolutions on what they will either do or change in the lives in the coming years. These could either be some habits they had been living with and want to change or a resolve on what they would want to see a change in their lives.

The same thing goes for Nigerians who have been expressing what they do not want to see in the country in the year 2017.

After sampling the opinions of a cross-section of Nigerians, five things stood out among the things they do not want to continue living with in the year 2017.

1. Election Violence

Elections in the country over the years have always been marked by violence, loss of lives, ballot box snatching, deaths and imposition of candidates by the so-called political god-fathers.

2016 saw elections conducted in three states, Edo State, Ondo State and the re-run elections in Rivers State but the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), did not particularly cover itself in glory as they also followed the normal pattern.

In fact, the politicians and political parties saw these elections as do or die affairs and as such, unleashed their thugs and hirelings and even with the massive deployment of security personnel, the political thugs still managed to carry out the biddings of their bosses and in the end, untold violence was unleashed on the electorates.

So, in 2017, Nigerians say they would live happily if electoral violence can be nipped in the bud.

2. Improved Infrastructures

The decay of infrastructure in the country over the years has been amazing where nothing seems to work for the good of the masses.

Supporters of the present government will argue that the infrastructure decay did not start with the current regime but before they got into power, they had promised Nigeria that they would soon change things for the betterment of the people, so for Nigerians to ask them to fulfill their promises is not asking for too much.

The state of the roads in the country can bring tears to the eyes; the airspace is nothing to write home about; national monuments like the National Stadiums both in Lagos and Abuja are appalling; health care has broken down; the educational sector is in shambles; the National Theatre in Lagos has become a den of robbers while other facilities have become national embarrassment.

Nigerians do not want to continue to live with these decays in 2017.

3. Corruption

Corruption has become the second nature of Nigerians in every facet of life, be it in political office or everyday lifestyle of Nigerians.

The way politicians have looted the country is alarming and has plunged Nigeria into its darkest hours and nothing seems to be done to stem the tide.

According to Transparency International, Nigeria is the 113 most corrupt country presently and from the look of things, this index is not about to change anytime soon with the rate at which the country’s political class is going where anyone elected into any position sees that as a ticket to loot the country blind.

Members of the National Assembly are not helping matters at all as all they do is to fight and scramble for what they can get without caring for the masses who voted them into power in the first place.

They are only concerned about what goes to them and any attempt by the executive to stop them is met with stiff resistance.

As a result of this impunity, Nigerians do not want to see corruption in 2017.

4. Recession

A direct repercussion of corruption is the recession that Nigeria slipped into which has caused untold hardship in the land.

With the cost of living rising daily and prices of good shooting to the high heavens, many Nigerian have lost their jobs and they are finding life very difficult by the day.

Businesses have folded up with companies running out of the country because of the harsh economic situation while the Naira has been on a free fall and there seems to be no hope in sight as the government seems at a loss on what to do.

Nigerians are united in demanding an end to the recession in the year 2017 and spare them the current suffering they are being made to go through.

5. Power Outages

In 2017, Nigerians want to see a country where power would be a thing of the past so that the economy will pick up once again.

The constant power outages have done so much damage to the country with companies and investors turning their backs on the nation, taking their businesses to other countries.

In 2017, Nigerians hope this present government will attend to the power sector on time and take Nigerians out of darkness.
