A police sergeant who shot and killed a student while pursuing an Internet fraudster in Lagos has been dismissed and charged to court.
Sergeant Collins Idom, the police officer who shot and killed a 20-year-old student of a polytechnic in Edo State, Joseph Eidonojie-Ugbeni, while allegedly chasing an Internet fraudster known as Badoo, has been dismissed by the Lagos State Police Command.

Punch reports that aside from the dishonorable dismissal, Sergeant Idom who has spent 14 years in the Nigeria Police Force, has been arraigned before an Ebute Meta Chief Magistrate’s Court for murder.
The incident happened at the Ogoja Market located on the LASU-Igando Road, Lagos, on September 19, 2016, saw Sergeant Idom, a member of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), shooting the student dead.
He was subsequently arrested, detained and dismissed after an orderly room trial at the State Command Headquarters, Ikeja.
The charge preferred against the killer cop read in part:
“That you, Collins Idom, on September 19, 2016, at about 09.30am, at Iba Town, Iba, Lagos, in the Lagos Magisterial District, did kill one Joseph Ugbeni, by shooting him with a gun on his head, thereby committing an offence punishable under Section 221 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.”

The police had, in a remand application brought before the court, said Idom confessed to the crime and was identified by witnesses, adding that there was no need for further investigation.
