A kidnap syndicate has been smashed in Rivers State following the arrest of three of them while withdrawing ransom money.
The Rivers State Police Command has smashed a notorious kidnapping syndicate said to be behind a series of abductions in the state, with the arrest of three members, including a woman.

According to a statement posted on the Facebook wall of the command, the arrest of the trio of Stanley Mgbiri, Blessing Mkpowu and Micheal Hope, by operatives of its Anti-Kidnapping Unit, came after they went to a bank to withdraw a ransom paid in by relatives of a victim.
The statement reads in part:
"Acting on a tip-off, the operatives were able to arrest Stanley Mgbiri, Mkpowu Blessing and Micheal Hope.
The trio are responsible for the kidnap of a 9-year-old girl, Miracle John, at Igbo Etche. They were arrested when they threatened to kidnap one Osato Nwakaji.
They asked him to pay the sum of N3 million into a certain bank account. They threatened to kidnap him as they did to a certain staff of NNPC, from whom they collected a ransom of N12m, and yet killed."

Nwakaji was said to have reported the threat to the police who advised him to play along and as a bait, the sum of N100,000 was paid into the account and when they went to withdraw it, they were arrested.
