A 60-year-old woman has lost her life and over 500 people rendered homeless by the floods which has engulfed Gummi Local Government in Zamfara state.

A 60-year-old woman has been reported as the casualty in a flood that destroyed over 100 houses in Gummi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

Confirming the sad incident to newsmen in Gummi on Thursday, September 14, the Vice Chairman of the council, Alhaji Sa’idu Bawa, blamed the flooding on the continuous downpour in the area.

Household materials, food items, as well as livestock, were also lost in the flooding.

Bawa also noted that over 500 people have been made homeless and forced to live with family members in the aftermath of the natural disaster.

“Apart from the disaster here in Gummi, we received similar report of the flood disaster in Gayari district and are going to visit the area after the assessment.

“We would compile all the list of the victims after which the local government would give its support to the victim,” he said.

Bawa added that a request for assistance would be forwarded to both the state and the federal government.

Describing the incident as unfortunate, the Councilor representing Rafi ward in Gummi district, Malam Sani Usamatu, said that the areas majorly affected by the flood in Gummi town were Albarkawa, Yardiga, Yartsayasu and Lemawa area.

Usamatu also noted that most of the victims of the flooding were women and children.

Speaking on behalf of all the victims, Malam Bala Muhammad, also a victim, appealed to the government at all levels to help by providing emergency assistance for them.
