Ify Otuya has cried out against her forced incarceration at a mental facility

The Nigerian Army have confirmed that Ify Otuya is undergoing psychiatric treatment, refuting her claims of being kidnapped and being held against her will.

After budding artiste, Ify Otuya, set social media on fire yesterday, Wednesday, September 14, alleging that she was kidnapped and is being held at the Nigerian Army Psychiatric Hospital in Lagos State, the hospital body has confirmed that she is undergoing psychiatric treatment.

The Nigerian Army Reference Hospital confirmed Otuya's confinement today Thursday, September 15. Otuya's post via her Facebook page read:

“I’m still being held here against my will, even after four weeks! If there’s still a responsible press in this country, you now know where to find me.

“They’re denying me access to my lawyer. Come and visit me friends —I would love to talk to you.”

The post quickly spread to Twitter where Nigerians were quick to condemn her family for what was assumed to have been an atrocious act.

Today, the Public Relations Officer for the Army Medical Corps, Mr Umar Adamu, disclosed that the claims about Ms Otuya being abducted were false.

Speaking with Premium Times, Mr Adamu said Ms Otuya was brought to the facility by her family after she showed signs of a mental health crisis.

“I made some findings and discovered that the woman was taken to our psychiatric hospital in Yaba by her father after the family noticed some abnormal signs,” he said.

Mr. Adamu went on to reveal that Ms. Otuya’s confinement was legally carried out as well.

“The hospital is holding her because of her health which is not against the law.

“Nigerians should not be worried because she’s safe where she is and her family members are there with her.

“Once she gets all the treatments as prescribed by the experts in the hospital, she will be released and will have her normal life back.”

In the first post Ms Otuya shared on August 16, referring to her situation, she made reference to an Emeka Ossai who Nigerians quickly assumed to be the Nollywood actor and filmmaker.

“I’m currently being held at a psychiatric hospital in Yaba by the police and Emeka Ossai (and other men in my family) against my will. Isn’t Lagos fun?” her post read.

When contacted, Mr Ossai told Premium Times that he was not the person being referred to.

“I have become helpless since yesterday as different people say all sorts of things to me over a woman I clearly don’t know or ever heard of before now.

“Whoever she is, I pray the Lord be with her and I thank you for reaching out to me.”
