A Lagos based Alhaja and her younger brother are in real deep trouble for allegedly using hot iron to scar their housemaid because she refused to 'drink' garri.
A 56-year-old Lagos State based woman, Alhaja Fatima Williams and her younger brother identified as Waliu, have been arrested and detained by the State Police Command for allegedly torturing their 16-year-old maid, Kemi Leona, with an hot iron just because she refused to eat a meal of soaked garri that was offered her.

The Nigerian Tribune reports that Alhaja Willams, a resident of Allen Avenue area of Ikeja in the state, claimed that the girl who is from Benin Republic, was too lazy and that she was not working for the money being paid her.
The two suspects were arrested by policemen from the Ikeja Divisio after the plight of the girl was reported to the DPO of the station by a concerned neighbour and the Commissioner of Police in the state, Fatai Owoseni, has waded into the matter, vowing to bring the suspects to book.

In justifying her inhuman acts to the police, Alhaja Williams who claimed to have gotten the maid from an agent named John, who brings young girls from the Republic of Benin to Nigeria to serve as house help, said the is too stubborn and always wet the bed and each time she tried to correct her, the girl would abuse her.
“On that fateful day, because I asked her to kneel down as a punishment for refusing to carry out house chores, she went into the kitchen and attempted to consume a local insecticide that I kept in the kitchen.
My younger brother who was ironing his clothes, then tried to wrest the poison from her. It was in the process of trying to collect the insecticide from her that he flogged her severally with cane. She also got burnt by the hot iron during the struggle.”
But the victim denied the claims of her boss, stating that she was battered with hot iron and a cable because she said she was tired of taking the soaked garri they always served her.
“That day when I refused to drink the garri, Uncle Waliu then started flogging me with a wire. Not satisfied, he went inside and plugged a pressing iron, when it became so hot, Uncle Waliu started using it on me.
I ran out of the house when I could not bear the pains anymore. My madam has not paid me any money since I started working for her since January, and anytime I ask her, she will say that she has paid the sum of N10,000 to the man who brought her.”

While reacting to the incident, Owoseni said the two arrested suspects would soon be charged to court.
"I am interested in this case which is a very case of a man inhumanity to man. I would personally see to the end of this case because it is a human interest case. I have ordered my men to charge them to court,” the CP said.
