Blasphemy: 8 killed for alleged insulting Islam in Zamfara

Eight people have lost their lives during a mob action over an allegedly insult on the Islamic religion in Zamfara State.

About eight people have been killed by a mob in the Talata-Mafara community of Zamfara State after violence broke out over allegations of blasphemy against the Islam religion by a student of Abdu Gusau Polytechnic, in the area.

The victims were killed after the mob set fire to a house where a man had hidden the offending student.

The student was alleged to have made a blasphemous statement against Islam and Prophet Muhammad and was allegedly attacked by the mob which beat him to a pulp and when the man identified only as Tajudeen attempted to rescue him and took him to hide in his house, the mob moved there and set the house on fire, killing other innocent people living there.

Reacting to the mob action, the State Governor, Alhaji Abdulaziz Yari, who called for an emergency Security Council meeting over the incident, expressed sadness and vowed that no stone will be left unturned until all those behind the act are brought to book.

Meanwhile, the police have imposed a 12-hour curfew in the community, from 7p.m. to 7a.m. daily, until further notice, warning that anyone caught violating the order would be prosecuted.
