Romantic affair between lecturers and students is strongly prohibited by the institution, based on comments coming from the school's Deputy Director for Corporate Affairs.

The Head of Department for English at the University of Ilorin, Dr Mohammed Idiagbon, has resigned from his position over his alleged wooing of a student.

According to Punch, Idiagbon invited the female student to his office where he held a conversation concerning having a romantic relationship with her.

The student was reported to have recorded the conversation she had with the lecturer, which led to an investigation into the matter.

It was during the investigation by the university authority that Idiagbon resigned.

According to a source who spoke to Punch, the case has been dismissed as a matter of rape.

Instead it is being viewed as an act of intimidation, where a lecturer was trying to force a student into having an affair.

“However, the lecturer did not rape the student, but only tried to intimidate her to become his lover,” the source said.

Mr. Kunle Akogun, the Deputy Director, Corporate Affairs, explained that the university frowns against any romantic relationship between  lecturers and students.

He said, “The lecturer was queried and removed as the Head of English Department, and invited before  a disciplinary panel.

“The lecturer, however, resigned his appointment with the university and did not appear before the panel.”
