Boko Haram Trauma: IDP says drug addiction helped him deal with memory of slaughtered parents

The activities of the Islamic insurgents have rendered many persons homeless, with thousands of death recorded through frequent attacks on civilians.

A 30 year-old man, Abubakar Mala, from Gamboru-Ngala in Borno State, has revealed his addiction to drugs has helped him overcome the trauma of losing his parents to an attack carried out by Islamic militants, Boko Haram.

Mala, who is one of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the state, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), in Maiduguri, the capital of Bornu.

According to him, he was not always addicted to drugs. Before the attack on his community by Boko Haram, he owned a prospering business.

“I was not a drug addict before; I had a flourishing business in Gamboru where I make good money to carter for my parents.”

“Unfortunately, everything was taken away from me, including all my family.”

“What do you expect me to be doing; how do you think I can forget this memories; to me, life means nothing.”

“I need to forget the memory of the sad event and that is only possible through the taking of drugs.”

“I love to be like this (drug addict) because it makes me forget all those madness”.

Islamic sect, Boko Haram, have caused the death of many and rendered thousands homeless in the north eastern part of Nigeria.
