The plight of pensioners in Nigeria was brought to the fore once again when a 75-year-old man identified as Sunday Oboite, slumped and died during the screening of pensioners at the Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

It was gathered that Oboite who worked in the Works Department of the local government before he retired, slumped and died at the reception of the secretariat, while waiting for his turn to be screened following dirtives by the council that the pensioners to undertake before they would be paid their 10-month pension arrears.

According to a witness, the septuagenarian had complained of hunger after waiting for a very long time and a Good Samaritan offered him a bottle of beverage drink and some water but shortly after, he was said to have slumped died with his death confirmed by some doctors at the council.

Oboite's death allegedly sparked a protest among other pensioners, who were angered by what had befallen their colleague.

“Some of them complained that they had presented themselves for screening at the secretariat at about 8am, but were later informed to go to Urhokpota Hall, about 100 metres away. They also decried the delay in the exercise, which took hours before it commenced,” a source said.
