Endless Xenophobia: 2 Nigerians killed again by South Africans in 48 hrs

A few weeks after Imo State Governor erected a statue in honour of South African President, two Nigerians businessmen have been murdered in that country.

Barely few weeks after Imo State Governor Owelle Rochas Okorocha honoured South African President, Jacob Zuma by erecting his N530 million statue, two Nigerians have been murdered in another wave of Xenophobic attacks.

News Agency of Nigeria [NAN], reports that the two victims, Ikechukwu Mmanwoke Edmond, a 40-year-old businessman and Eluka Agu, also a businessman, were brutally murdered, leaving the Nigerian community in that country in great grief.

While Edmond, a native of Ihembosi, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, was killed in front of his house on Amant Street, Malvern, Johannesburg, on Saturday, November 11, 2017, Agu, who hailed from Ihiala also in Anambra, was allegedly robbed and beaten by some South Africans at Oliven, Centurion, on Monday, November 13.

An eyewitness and neighbour of Edmond who identified herself as Sibongile, was quoted as saying that six men came to their house and started breaking doors and taking out their personal effects.

“When I raised an alarm, the man started beating me. When Ikechukwu came in and saw what was happening, he brought out his phone to call the police.

A member of the gang took a brick and hit him in the face and he fell down. When the police arrived, he was already dead,” Sibongile said.

It was gathered that the South African Police has commenced investigations into the killing of the Nigerians, vowing to get to the root of the matter but as usual, such investigations would amount to nothing as is always the case.

This is not the first time Nigerians have been killed in their numbers in South Africa with the Nigerian government doing nothing about it apart from saying they will look into the matter.

In the past three years, more than 300 Nigerians have been killed in the country either by the police, criminals or even through Xenophobic attacks.

Only recently, in October, to be precise, a Nigerian man, Tochukwu Nnadi, was shot dead in over an alleged 300 Rand (about N7,500) parking lot debt.

Reacting to the murder of Nnadi, the Special Assistant to the President on Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, said:

“The barbaric behaviour of the perpetrators is not only unacceptable, but also calls for urgent attention by diplomatic authorities in Nigeria and South Africa.”

And that was where the whole story ended as neither the killers of Nnadi have been apprehended and prosecuted.

It is rather pathetic that the same South Africans that the Nigerian government spent billions of Dollars to help in the fight against apartheid should turn around to kill Nigerians resident in their country.

The questions to be asked are: when will South Africans stop the massacre of Nigerians and when will the Nigerian government take steps to stop these barbaric Xenophobic acts?
