A man in Kano dies from injuries sustained during the game of Sharo.
A traditional game of sharo, a Fulani custom which is meant to test the strength of young men, turned into a tragedy after a young man, Yari Inusa, lost his life battling another suitor for a lady’s hand in marriage.
The incident occurred at Durmin Biri village, in the Kafur Local Government Area of Katsina State.
Inusa died after sustaining injuries on the head when he engaged in the Fulani sharo game with another man, Ahmed Saidu, which was meant to determine who would have the lady's hand in marriage.
It was reported that Inusa had flogged Saidu without any issue, but when it came to the turn of Saidu to flog Inusa, tragedy struck.
As the rule of the game states, the suitors are meant to flog each other on the back, but Saidu struck Inusa on the head, instead of flogging him on the back.
After he was hit on the head, it was said that Inusa fainted immediately and died eventually.
DSP Gambo Isah, the Katsina State Police Command spokesman confirmed the incident.
He said, “Inusa’s father, Mallam, reported the incident to the police, leading to the arrest of Saidu.”
He said Inusa's body had been released to the family and he had been buried according to Islamic rites.
