In his quest to raise enough money for his honeymoon, a newly married man has been arrested for smuggling heroin into the country.

A 38-year-old trader, King Sunday has been arrested by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), with 3.900kg of heroin on arrival at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, on arrival from Nairobi, Kenya.

Punch reports that Sunday who was arrested four days after his marriage confessed to officials of the NDLEA that the need to have good money for his honeymoon led him into the crime.

Arrested alongside Sunday was another drug trafficker, Egwin Cajetan Chinedu, a 32-year-old commercial tricycle rider, who was nabbed with 2.490kg of heroin with the combined worth of the illicit drugs put at N575 million.

During interrogation, Sunday allegedly said:

“I erroneously took the decision to smuggle the drug barely four days after my marriage. I needed money for my honeymoon. But I should not have involved myself in drug trafficking.

My thinking was that I could smuggle the drug from Nairobi in two days without my wife knowing that I traveled out of the country.”

Chinedu, on his part, said he was to be given N400,000 after the botched operation, adding that he wanted to use part of the money to repair his tricycle.

“I am a commercial tricycle rider in Imo State. The engine of my tricycle, which is my only source of livelihood, is bad.

While I was looking for money to fix it, I was introduced to the man that promised to pay me N400,000 on the condition that I will bring the drug from Kigali.

I accepted the offer because nobody was willing to help me. Apart from the repairs, my rent is due and my landlord has been asking for his money,” he said.
