The aggrieved couple identified as Mr and Mrs Boniface Ihiasota, publishers of Excel Magazine, embarked on hunger strike on Monday, September 26, and passed the night at the front desk of the publishing house after demanding to see the managing director of the company to no avail.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, September 27, Mr Iheota alleged that the company had refused to reprint the magazine or refund his money.

“They messed up my printing. The picture qualities are bad. They didn’t attempt to treat any of the pictures. They also failed to meet deadline, seven times. I booked and changed flights from the United States of America, seven times because of the delay caused by the company. Flight money is never refunded. My wife was supposed to take the magazines to Addisa-Abba, but she couldn’t. She had to book a flight down to Nigeria, to know what was causing the delay. All these cost us money. The General Manager promised to reprint the magazines and take care of logistics but now, the company has reneged. The company didn’t meet deadline and that in effect, affected my business. I am therefore demanding N160 million as compensation.”

When asked about the initial amount paid for the printing, a staff of the printing press, speaking on the grounds of anonymity disclosed that Mr Iheota has only paid a deposit of N1.2 million.

The staff also claimed that only a few of the pictures in the magazine were unclear, adding that it was the complainant was to blame for giving the go ahead to print even after his attention was brought to the pictures which were blurry at the time.

The source said, “We have text messages and emails of the conversations with him. When we noticed that some of the pictures sent were not bright enough, we told him to send better ones and when he didn’t, we sent him a mail requesting if we should go ahead with what he sent and he said we could.

"When he came yesterday (Monday), he was shouting and requested to see our boss. While he was raising his voice, he scattered our bookshop, broke some items and even attempted to stab one of our workers with a sharp object but it was collected from him. We have everything on tape. We instructed our security men not to touch him or his wife, as he might end up saying that he was attacked. Even when he slept in our office, we allowed him. We even told him to go with the completed job and that we would print the next edition free for him, yet he refused.”

Both parties were taken to the police station after policemen from Alausa division were invited to the scene.
