FrieslandCampina WAMCO has denied sponsoring the national quiz competition that claimed the lives of 7 students from Kano in a ghastly motor accident.
On May 5, about seven students from secondary schools in Kano State, perished alongside two other men in a ghastly motor accident on their way back home from Lagos State where they had gone to represent their state in a quiz competition.

The following day, a statement credited to the the Director General, Media and Communications to the Executive Governor of Kano State, Halilu Ibrahim Dantiye, purportedly said that the competition was sponsored by FrieslandCampina WAMCO Plc, makers of Peak Milk, and that an official of the company, one Mr. Okafor who also died along with the students, was the coordinator of the competition.
However, the company has refuted the report, saying they did not sponsor any competition, neither did their staff die in the ill fated trip.
In a press release signed by the Corporate Affairs Dirctor of WAMCO, Ore Famurewa, the company stated categorically that they found the report quite offensive.

“We didn’t sponsor quiz competition”
Dairy giant FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC, has lamented the deaths of seven Kano students reported to have occurred in a motor accident on Tuesday May 3 in Oyo State, but the company has denied reports of its involvement as sponsors of a national quiz competition the students had attended.
The Corporate Affairs Director, FrieslandCampina WAMCO, Mrs. Ore Famurewa in a media statement, said:
“We express our heartfelt condolences to the families of the seven students who lost their lives in the accident.
However, we find very discomfiting errors published by some online news sites and a national television station mentioning our company with regards to the sad event. We hereby state categorically that FrieslandCampina WAMCO was not in any way connected to the sad event nor did any of our staff die in the crash.
We didn’t sponsor the national quiz competition that the students had attended nor did we sponsor any quiz competition at this time. We sincerely pray for the comfort of the bereaved families and the government of Kano State."
