The arrival of their 'fallen angel' had reportedly given rise to rumours of a heavenly offering which had spread like wild fire through the community, prompting fears of social unrest.

The reports reveal that a villager who goes by the name, Pardin, like many Indonesians who go by one name, had reportedly found the doll  while on a fishing trip off the remote Banggai islands off Sulawesi in central Indonesia.

The discovery which had been made in March, coincidentally came a day after a solar eclipse had swept across the area, an occurrence seen as a deeply spiritual experience in the world's most populous Muslim-majority country.

Pardin had reportedly taken the partially inflated doll to his home in Kalupapi village, where it was treated with great reverence as the superstitious locals had believed that the two events were linked.

His mother had given the 'angel' fresh change of clothes and a new Muslim headscarf to wear every day, as pictures showed the doll sitting up in a chair as well as accompanying locals on a boat trips.

The Police had according to reports, decided to investigate the issue after becoming concerned that the increasing excitement about the 'angel' could lead to social unrest.

The police chief, Heru Pramukarno, said:

"We were hearing many stories, such as that the "fallen angel" was crying when she was discovered. When our officers arrived, they saw that the "fallen angel" was just a doll, it was a sex toy.

"They have no Internet, they don't know what a sex toy is."
